My routine
We spoke to the owner for his routine.
Washing, care and styling
I wash my hair two to three times a week. I prefer to wash it in the late afternoon, evening, or on the weekend, so I have time to let my hair dry naturally. When washing, I only use conditioner. Sometimes I do a two-step conditioner application. If my hair is dirty, greasy, or dry, I use the first step with conditioner as my shampoo. If you use good hair products that rinse out easily with water, shampooing is less necessary.
Then, after applying conditioner, but before rinsing, I comb through my hair. I use a wide-toothed comb for this. Then I rinse my hair.
After washing, I don't dry my hair, but I immediately add gel. I use a gel that hardens well and doesn't stay soft. I apply it using a combination of scrunching and finger combing.
I prefer to let my hair air-dry. For this, I use a thin sports headband or elastic band that goes around my entire head, otherwise my hair falls in my eyes. When my hair is almost dry, I take the headband off. Once the gel has hardened, I scrunch it out. This keeps the curls in place, but the hair isn't stiff anymore. If I go to sleep without my hair being dry yet, I drape a towel over my pillow. The next morning, I can easily style my hair.
If I don't have time to let my hair air-dry, I blow-dry it with a diffuser. I use a medium heat setting, not a high one at all. This only makes my hair dry. I "hoover" my hair, and sometimes "scrunch" the diffuser to dry certain areas better and create volume. Depending on the situation, I blow-dry my hair until almost dry or completely dry.
To model
If I don't wash my hair, I style it by slightly wetting my hands and running them through my hair. I do this mainly in the mornings before work. This allows me to style my hair to my liking.
To cut
I have medium-length hair. A good indicator for me is always the length of my hair, how tangled it is, and how easy it is to comb. If my hair gets tangled quickly, or stays tangled, or I have trouble combing it, or I simply find it too long, then it's an indicator for me to get a new haircut. Over the years, I've tried several hair salons, but finding a stylist who can handle curls well is a challenge. Fortunately, I found one I'm very happy with and have been with for years now. I go to the hairdresser about once every six months.
My routine simplified
- Wash 2/3 times a week
- Shampoo or container (co-wash)
- Let the conditioner soak in
- Comb with a wide-toothed comb after conditioner, before rinsing
- Rinse
- Add gel to wet hair using the scrunching and finger combing method.
- Air dry or blow dry.
- Once the hair is dry and the gel has hardened, scrunch the gel out and style.
- In the morning, style your hair with a little water.
Conclusion
My routine is pretty simple, and I use very few products. It's a combination of what my hair needs, how much time I want to spend on it, and how much time I actually have. I'd put in more effort for a party than I would for getting up early in the morning and going to work. This is my routine, but it's important to find a routine that works for you, suits your hair, and fits your lifestyle. It's a matter of research, experimentation, and fine-tuning your routine.
